Setup Information for Windows 95

Before you begin please contact Customer Support at 1-877-531-7498 to set up your new account. Note: While you're setting up your new account please keep in mind usernames can be numbers and/or letters only, no spaces, start with a letter and be 12 characters maximum in length. Passwords can be numbers and/or letters only, no spaces, can start with either a number or letter, be 12 characters maximum in length and are case sensitive.


Windows 95 PPP Configuration

1. Verify that Dial-up Networking and TCP-IP are installed from your Windows 95 CDROM.

    a) click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel and double-click the Network icon

    b) if you don't see Dial-Up Adapter in the list of installed network components:
        i. click Add, then double-click on Adapter
       ii. from the list of Manufacturers, select Microsoft
      iii. from the list of Network Adapters, select Dial-Up Adapter
      iv. click OK

    c) if you don't see TCP/IP in the list of installed network components:
       i. click Add, then double-click on Protocol
      ii. from the list of Manufacturers, select Microsoft
    iii. from the list of Network Protocols, select TCP/IP
    iv. click OK

    d) if you added items in step c) or d), click OK and follow the prompts from Windows95

    e) If you added "Dial-Up Adapter" in step B. Go to Control Panel, and double click the "Add/Remove Programs" icon. Then click on the "Windows Setup" tab. Select the line showing "Communications" and click the "Details" button. Put a check in the box on the line for "Dial-Up Networking". Then click OK until you get back to the Windows desktop.

2. Now that the drivers are installed, you need to configure it so it will work with Windows 95. Go to the Control Panel and double-click the Network icon. You should get a dialog box like this:

3.Click on the TCP/IP protocol (highlighted in the picture) and press the Properties... button. You should get the TCP/IP Properties box.

4.There are six sections in this dialog box. We'll deal with them in order. You need to click on the name of the configuration item on the "tab" to get to it.

IP Address
  • Select the Obtain an IP address automatically option.
WINS Configuration
  • Select the Disable WINS Resolution option.
Gateway
  • Do not enter any gateway numbers.
  • If there are any numbers in the list of Installed Gateways, remove them now.
Bindings
  • By default, the Client for Microsoft Networks option is checked. No changes are required.
Advanced
  • No changes needed are from the default values.
DNS Configuration
  • Select the Disable DNS option. This stands for Domain Name Service.

When you're all done setting these options, press the OK button. Then press the OK button in the Network dialog box. Windows 95 will ask you to reboot. Press Yes and run to the fridge for a quick snack. You're almost done!

Set up the Connection Icon

  1. Open up My Computer from the desktop and double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon. Double-click the Make New Connection icon. This will walk you through the Make New Connection wizard.
  2. Type in "Eagle", "Eagle Net", or whatever you want to call the icon you're about to create to connect you to Eagle (the title won't affect the type of connection). Your modem (which should have been configured when you installed Windows 95) should be shown in the Select a modem: area. Press the Configure button.
  3. In the General section, set your modem speed. DO NOT select Only connect at this speed.  If you have a 56K modem, you may need to come back to this section to adjust your max speed lower for a more reliable connection.
  4. Don't worry about the Connection or
  5. Options sections, the defaults should be fine.
  6. Click the Next > button in the Make New Connection wizard. Enter the Phone Number you need to use from the table below:

  1. Press the Finish button and your icon will be created

Setting the Dial-Up Properties

  1. Press the right mouse button on your newly-created connection icon, then choose Properties from the menu that appears. You will get a dialog box named whatever name you gave your connection.
  2. Press the Server Type... button. You'll get the Server Types dialog box. In the Type of Dial-Up Server section, make sure that PPP: Windows95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet is selected.
  3. In the Advanced options:
    a). make sure that Log on to network, Enable software compression, and Require encrypted password are NOT checked.
    b). make sure that TCP/IP in the Allowed network protocols section IS checked, NetBeui and IPX/SPX should NOT be checked.
  4. Press the TCP/IP Settings... button.
    • Check Server assigned IP address.
    • Check Specify name server adresses.
    • In the Primary DNS box enter:  208.159.114.2
    • In the Secondary DNS box enter:  208.159.114.6
    • Leave the Primary and Secondary WINS as all zeros.
    • Use IP header compression and Use default gateway on remote network should both be checked.
  5. Then press the OK button.
  6. Hit the OK button in the remaining dialog box, and you're almost ready to dial!

Dialing in and Getting Connected

  1. Once you have contacted EagleNet Customer Support and created your new account, you can begin logging on with your assigned username and password. Double-click the shortcut to EagleNet icon on the desktop that you made. You will get a Connect To dialog, which is shown below. Enter your username and password and click connect.

  4. If you would like to setup Newsgroups, our news server address is: news.egl.net You will find instructions on our site (click here) for setting this up within Internet Explorer.
  5. To start surfing the web, dial EagleNet and open up your browser software (Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator).
